To ensure that sailing with guests is as safe as possible, there are rules and periodic inspections for traditional sailing ships that sail with passengers, such as Tjalkjacht Pelikaan. For example, we must comply with all legal safety requirements of European safety regulations.
The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILenT) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is the supervisor and ultimately responsible for compliance with these regulations in the Netherlands. They do this with more than 1,300 employees who work together on safety, trust and sustainability in transport, infrastructure, the environment and living. In addition to shipping, they also do this for aircraft and seagoing vessels.
Tjalkjacht Pelikaan is periodically inspected on various components on behalf of the ILenT. This includes separate inspections of the structure, rigging, rescue equipment, navigation and communication equipment, etc. These inspections are carried out by ILenT certified inspection bodies.
As soon as an inspection has been successfully completed, we receive a certificate with which we can demonstrate that the specific part of Tjalkjacht Pelikaan has been approved for a certain period.
In addition to the existing statutory organizations, the Charter Boating Safety Platform was established in 2018. This is a joint consultation body of inspection agencies, booking offices, the Enkhuizer Maritime School and skippers of passenger sailing, united in the BBZ. The participants have agreed to work together in the platform and to structurally record and share knowledge about safety.
The skipper has a Large Boating License for commercial shipping. In addition, the crew adheres to the rules laid down in the Inland Shipping Act. This means we meet the same regular training requirements as inland shipping and sea shipping.
Everything on board Tjalkjacht Pelikaan is about safety. The crew has undergone thorough training, the ship has a high child-friendly railing and there are sufficient life jackets and safety equipment for all guests on board. In addition to the periodic inspection, all spars (including mast and boom) are inspected monthly and any work carried out is recorded in a digital and analogue maintenance log.
Under the inspections tab you will find all current inspection certificates, and a brief log of all spars, etc.
